How do I use alerts?

Trading alerts are free, automatic, and customisable notifications sent to you whenever your specifications are triggered – like when economic events occur, prices move and technical conditions change. By having us monitor the markets for you, you’ll be able to get on with your day and take advantage of opportunity when it arises.

There are three types of trading alerts, namely:

  1. Price alerts (includes price change alerts and price level alerts)
  2. Technical indicator alerts
  3. Economic event alerts

Price change alerts will notify you of either a percentage or points-based movement over a set time frame. These alerts are great for applying to assets in your open positions window as well as to markets you’re looking to trade on.

Price level alerts will notify you when a specific price point has been breached by the market. You can choose to be notified if either the buy or sell price passes your desired threshold.

Technical indicator alerts are similar to price alerts but allow you to respond to particular technical indicators rather than price movements. They are created via our integrated charts and can comprise indicators like a moving average, Bollinger Bands, relative strength index (RSI) and others.

Economic event alerts deliver macroeconomic figures to you the moment they’re released to the market. You can activate these alerts using our economic calendar.

Desktop platform

You can set up alerts on our desktop trading platform, which you can access through your browser. Depending on which settings you select, you’ll receive a notification either by email or mobile push notification whenever an alert is triggered. If, however, an alert is triggered while you’re logged in to the platform, you’ll receive your notification via an in-platform pop-up message.

Price and technical indicator alerts

To create a new price or indicator alert, open a deal ticket for the market you’d like to trade and click on the ‘alert’ tab (1), which you’ll find at the top of the ticket next to the ‘deal’ and ‘order’ tabs.

Under the ‘alert’ tab, choose which type of alert (price change, price level, or indicator alert) you want to create (2). Enter the required information (3) and then click on the ‘set alert’ button (4) to complete the process (you may need to scroll down to find it).

You can track and manage your alerts from the ‘alerts’ section in the left-hand navigation menu (1) or from the ‘alerts’ window in your workspace.

Price change and indicator alerts remain active until you delete them. Price level alerts, on the other hand, remain active only until they’re triggered, after which they cannot be modified or reactivated.

Economic event alerts

You can set up economic event alerts using our economic calendar. To access the calendar from within the platform, click on ‘econ calendar’ in the left-hand navigation menu (1). The calendar will open in a new tab, after which you’ll be able to select the date that you’re interested in (2). Next, make sure the ‘macroeconomic events’ tab is selected (3) and then check the tick boxes for any events that you’d like to be notified about in the ‘alerts’ column (4).

Clicking the cog at the top of the column will allow you to specify how you want to receive your alerts (for example, whether you’d like to be notified before or at the time of the event and by which means you’d like to be notified).

Alert groups

Alerts are grouped according to type (price change, price level and indicator alerts).

Alert sound effects

You’ll receive a sound notification if an alert is triggered while you’re logged in to the platform. To disable this notification, click on ‘settings’ in the left-hand navigation menu (1), scroll to the ‘platform settings’ section and toggle the ‘alert sound effect’ switch (2) to the off position.

Notification preferences

If you’d like to change the way you receive your notifications (ie your notification settings), you can do so by logging in to My IG, clicking on the ‘settings’ tab (1) and then clicking on ‘price & dealing alerts’ under the ‘platform preferences’ section in the left-hand menu (2). Once you’ve done that, simply check the tick boxes for the type(s) of notification that you’d like to receive (3).

Mobile

You can experience the benefits of using trading alerts on any Android or iOS device with our mobile app. You’ll receive a push notification via the app whenever an alert is triggered.

Price level and price change alerts

To set up a price alert on the app, simply find the market you’d like to trade and select ‘set alert’ (1). Next, choose whether you want a price level alert or a price change alert (2) and then enter your desired criteria (3). Remember to tap the ‘set alert’ button (4) to complete the process.

Viewing and modifying alerts

To view your alerts, go to the main navigation menu and tap the ‘alerts’ tab (1). Under this tab, you’ll be able to see all the triggered and untriggered alerts you have on your account (2). To edit or delete an alert, select the relevant one from the list and follow the prompts.

You’ll receive a push notification on your mobile device when any of your indicator or economic alerts are triggered. However, it’s important to note that these alerts can currently only be created and edited from our desktop trading platform.

Remember, to receive any push notifications on your mobile device, your system settings must be enabled (follow the notification settings instructions for Android/iOS).

Our alerts will follow your device settings in terms of sound notifications. You’ll therefore receive a sound notification with every push notification as long as your device isn’t on silent mode. Personalised sound notifications for specific alert types aren’t yet available.
